The headline making waves online is dramatic: Kimchi latches onto plastics in the gut and removes them through waste.
There is a fascinating piece of research behind that claim—but it needs context.
Scientists did not prove that eating a bowl of kimchi will “detox” your body of plastic. What they found is that a specific beneficial bacterium isolated from kimchi was able to bind to certain nanoplastics in laboratory testing and appeared to increase their excretion in mice.
That is exciting. But it is still early science.

The research studied an isolated bacterial strain—not ordinary servings of store-bought kimchi in humans.
Does Eating Kimchi Remove Plastic From Your Body?

At this point, we cannot say that eating kimchi removes microplastics or nanoplastics from the human body. We also cannot say that every type of kimchi contains the same bacterial strain, in the same amount, or in a form that survives digestion and produces the same effect.

You do not need to become fearful of every plastic item in your life. The goal is progress, not panic.

Kimchi has not been proven to “flush plastic from the human body.”
