{"id":79,"date":"2026-05-02T10:03:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-02T10:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/postdailys.com\/?p=79"},"modified":"2026-05-02T10:03:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-02T10:03:10","slug":"25-year-old-woman-explained-why-she-chose-to-be-euthanized","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/postdailys.com\/?p=79","title":{"rendered":"25-Year-Old Woman Explained Why She Chose To Be Euthanized"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A 25-year-old woman who was at the center of a controversial legal battle in Spain to choose to be euthanized has now died.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Noelia Castillo had fought to be allowed to choose to be euthanized, against the wishes of her own family members.<\/p>\n<p>Her legal battle became a major controversy in Spain and ended up before the European Court of Human Rights, per the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>Campaign groups, supported by her father, fought to stop her from making the decision, arguing that she was incapable of making an informed one.<\/p>\n<p>The ECHR ruled in her favor earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Before she died in March, Castillo opened up about the reason she chose to be euthanized.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-lengthy-legal-battle\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The lengthy legal battle<\/h2>\n<p>Castillo first applied for the right to assisted dying in 2024, and the Catalan Government initially approved the request.<\/p>\n<p>Spain first legalized euthanasia in 2021, becoming the fourth country in the European Union to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, there have been many cases that have been successful in fighting for assisted dying.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, in 2024, data from the Spanish government shows that 426 requests for assisted dying were granted.<\/p>\n<p>Castillo\u2019s appeal was suspended at the last minute after objections were made by a conservative campaign group called Abogados Cristianos (Christian Lawyers).<\/p>\n<p>The group was acting in support of Castillo\u2019s father, who was firmly against her decision.<\/p>\n<p>They argued that Castillo\u2019s psychiatric condition meant that she was unable to make an informed decision about what she wanted to happen.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/igvofficial.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Screenshot-2026-04-17-at-15.36.17-1024x574.png\" alt=\"Noelia Castillo\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to her family, she suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder.<\/p>\n<p>It is reported that she had been in psychiatric treatment since the age of 13, when her parents separated.<\/p>\n<p>Her father argued that it was \u2018the obligation of the state to protect the lives of people\u2019 and by allowing his daughter to die,e they were failing \u2018the most vulnerable.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>This objection sparked a legal battle that lasted almost two years and ultimately reached the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).<\/p>\n<p>It was at the ECHR in Strasbourg that Castillo\u2019s father\u2019s requests were finally rejected, a nd her right to assisted dying was approved.<\/p>\n<p>After she died, the Abogados Cristianos posted on social media that the case \u2018highlights the serious flaws\u2019 in the Spanish assisted dying laws.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNoelia\u2019s case had moved the entire\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/igvofficial.com\/category\/news\/world-news\/\">world<\/a>,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe euthanasia law must be abolished. Every\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/igvofficial.com\/category\/life\/\">life<\/a>\u00a0should be defended, not abandoned.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-i-just-want-to-leave-in-peace\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018I just want to leave in peace.\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Before she died, Castillo opened up to the BBC about her decision.<\/p>\n<p>She said that she had always \u2018felt alone\u2019 in her appeal as her family repeatedly fought against her wishes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobody in my family is in favor,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am leaving, a nd you are staying here with all the pain, but what about all the suffering I have endured over the years?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to live in peace and stop the pain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe happiness of a father or a mother or a sister shouldn\u2019t precede the happiness of a daughter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that she would allow her family to come and say goodbye, but when it came to the injection, it would just be her and the doctor.<\/p>\n<p>Her mother, Yoland, said that although she didn\u2019t agree with her daughter\u2019s decision, she \u2018respected\u2019 it.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-why-did-she-choose-to-be-euthanized\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why did she choose to be euthanized?<\/h2>\n<p>Castillo chose to be euthanized after she had jumped from a fifth-floor window following multiple s****l assault incidents.<\/p>\n<p>She said the first assault was by her ex-boyfriend of four years after she had taken sleeping pills to help her sleep.<\/p>\n<p>After that, she said she was also assaulted in a nightclub by a group of men.<\/p>\n<p>In 2022, she says that she was gang-r***d by 3 boys in a state-supervised center for vulnerable youth.<\/p>\n<p>These incidents left Castillo struggling to cope, and so she decided to end her life by jumping out of the window.<\/p>\n<p>She survived the fall, but it left her paralyzed from the waist down.<\/p>\n<p>It also resulted in her suffering from severe chronic pain with no possibility of improvement.<\/p>\n<p>Her mental health had also deteriorated significantly since the incident, and she was struggling to cope.<\/p>\n<p>Noelia died on 26 March after her wish to be euthanized was granted.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 25-year-old woman who was at the center of a controversial legal battle in Spain to choose to be euthanized has now died.
